Porter, 29, has made something of a name for herself for being open-minded – as well as exploring her own issues – through her documentary-making. Shows in her previous UK series included Dawn Gets Naked (where she experienced airbrushing, felt depressed about her body, and so gathered naked women of all shapes for an open-top bus tour through London); Dawn Goes Lesbian (where she figured that, what with the lack of promising men in her life, if she immersed herself in a lesbian lifestyle, she might increase her options. She failed); and Dawn Gets Her Man (where, despite a nationwide boyfriend competition, which included an ingenious dancing test for would-be suitors, she – you guessed it – failed).

The themes of self-discovery and singledom continue in her new series, in which Porter attempts to understand some unconventional ways of finding love, sometimes by experiencing them herself. "I'm 29 and have been single for four years," she explains. "I haven't met a man I want to be monogamous with yet. So what if that's still the situation in 10 years' time? What could I learn from alternative lifestyles? That became the whole premise of the series."

And so Porter set out to discover some of the more extreme ways that women find and maintain love – all, interestingly, extremely submissive ways. Women, for example, who want to get out of Ukraine so badly that they will marry a western man they hardly know. For this episode, Porter focused on a company called A Foreign Affair – an Odessa- based introduction agency which specialises in "romance holidays": travel packages for western men looking for a foreign bride.

The highlight of the $5,000 trip is the "social" – a huge party that brings together potential brides and grooms, with free booze and a buffet. Rather disappointingly for the men, the booze and buffet seems the biggest draw for the women. "One woman walked in, emptied an entire tray of sausage rolls into her handbag, and left. People were handing out flyers to women on the street, saying, 'Come to this party tonight, free alcohol!'"

Many of the supposedly amorous women from the agency that the men had been emailing in advance of the holiday didn't bother turning up. "Women are less and less desperate to get out of Ukraine since we joined the EU," admits the tour guide. But as one door closes, another opens in the Phillipines and Thailand – where A Foreign Affair has recently opened offices. "Yes," she says, "there is an economic aspect to this phenomenon."

Thousands of girls in South Africa are queuing up each month to prove that they are virgins, reviving an African tradition seen by many as the answer to the scourge of AIDS.

Bare-breasted teenagers wearing nothing but strings of beads and colourful loincloths regularly submit to the ordeal of having a stranger check if their hymens are intact, leaping for joy when the test confirms that they are still virgins.

Advocates say the revival of the rite, which had died out in all but a few rural areas late in the 20th century, is the most effective way to stop the spread of teenage pregnancies and the deadly HIV virus, believed to affect one in 10 South Africans.

Opponents argue that the practice is unconstitutional, unhygienic and violates the human rights of those being tested.

“Those who are behind the comeback...say that if we test young girls to see if they are virgins they will be fearful and will not engage in sexual activity,” said Phumelele Ntombela-Nzinande, former deputy head of the Commission for Gender Equality.

“We are arguing that this practice undermines the principles of equality, freedom and human dignity. It is difficult to tell whether or not a girl has had intercourse and after touching about 600 girls you can easily transfer infections.”

Girls between the age of seven and 26 lie on a mat in front of the woman doing the test, which only takes a few seconds. It is often carried out with bare hands and the tester seldom washes them.

Girls who pass get white stars pasted on their foreheads and a certificate confirming their virginity.

“We have come here to celebrate and keep our culture going,” 16- year-old Brenda Mkhize told Reuters television after her test.

“It’s better to be a virgin than to have AIDS and have a baby at the age of 16...we don’t see any reason to sleep with a guy, and I think I will stay like this until I get married.”

Mkhize was one of hundreds of girls attending a virginity celebration at a sports stadium near Durban in December.

Afterwards, the girls sang and danced in traditional Zulu fashion.

“We are here because we are proud of ourselves, because we are virgins,” another girl said.

Act chivalrous. Men, the women's liberation movement may have provided women with the means to financial independence and positions of power, but this does not mean that she no longer appreciates those little things that make you a gentlemen. Open doors for your date, pull out her chair for her, make sure she gets home safely. These are the things that make a good impression. Sarah, 31, believes: "If used correctly, chivalry is the charm of all charms; if overused, it seems like machismo."

By spending a couple of hours reading through the dating ads in whatever newspaper or magazine you normally read anyway, you can get a really good idea of who's looking for what.

Are personal ads completely accurate? Can they be useful? Good questions. If you believed everything that was written, you'd believe that all women are blonde, svelte, emerald-eyed owners of their own antiques importing businesses and all men are handsome, chisel-chinned CEOs looking to settle down with a wife and kids after taking long romantic walks on the beach on their private islands.

If you're already feeling outclassed, if you're not skinny, or if you don't own your own business, don't worry. Be assured that people are not necessarily very accurate in their self-descriptions. Many seemingly normal, happy, fun people are out there looking. When you're ready, you can hop right on out there and answer — or even write — an ad if you wish.

Know who you are

Stop sweating. You're not going to send the ad anywhere, but writing a personal ad does a bunch of cool things for you:

Know what you want

One of the quickest ways to make sure that what you're advertising for and what you want are the same is to dummy up a personal ad. A personal ad can tell you very quickly if what you want and how you're advertising are out of whack. If you're looking for someone with whom to settle down, for example, then looks should be less important to you than stability, sincerity, and fertility. If you love to travel, you shouldn't be trolling for a homebody. Look at what you said you wanted in your mate (your fantasy) and what you said about yourself (your reality). What you're looking for is compatible or complementary traits. If in the About Me section, for example, you listed that you want stability and commitment but you listed adventurous risk-taker in the About Him/Her section of the ad, you have some work to do in order to get these two lists compatible.

In determining if the lists are compatible, look for overlap in words or ideas. If you see "fun-loving" in your list, you probably want to see "fun-loving" — or a concept like it — in the fantasy date's list, too; be careful if your fantasy date's list includes "down to earth and serious." You may be saying to yourself, "Hey look, I'm only talking about a date." But going off in a direction that makes no sense — why date someone of another faith if you would never allow yourself to fall in love with that person or marry out of the faith? Why date someone who smokes if you hate smoking? — unless you simply want a diversion, which is expensive in terms of time and energy and emotion. Of course, if you want to do that, it's fine. Just make sure that you make your intentions clear up front to all parties concerned, including yourself.

CLOSER to home in Indonesia, moralists and religious purists are at it again.
They are attempting to stop a movie company's plan to fly in Maria "Miyabi" Ozawa, a Japanese adult movie actress, to co-star in a local comedy flick about college students being obsessed by the 23-year-old babe.

Miyabi is scheduled to arrive in Jakarta on Wednesday for the shooting of the film "Menculik Miyabi" and the momentum to stop her going to Indonesia is rising.

"Maria 'Miyabi' Ozawa fully clothed, anyone?" ran a heading in the Jakarta Post that stated the threat of massive protests (which could turn ugly like the one when the Islamic Defenders Front, or FPI, attacked Playboy Indonesia in 2006) has already put the plan in doubt.

The report said the critics' provocative rhetoric seems to be aimed at garnering support from the masses who share their ideology.

Among the things they say are:
* "Indonesia has the largest Muslim population. How can we let Miyabi feature in a local film?
* "As we know Miyabi had when she was only 13. Where is our morality? Her presence would taint our image and we should slap on some moral sanctions if she does come here albeit not for a porn flick."

However, there are others who welcome Miyabi with open arms.

Model/TV personality Olga Lydia, video jockey Marissa, the National Commission on Violence against Women and even Communication Minister M. Nuh are among those who welcome Miyabi in the spirit of freedom of expression.

That was interpreted by the writer as:" It sounds like the film maker/producer is promoting a Jackie Chan flick but making it clear that the kung fu hero refrains from fighting.

"If his purpose is to please his critics, Sudiadi may consider making Miyabi wear a dress covering her from head to toe throughout her appearance."

In 2006, there was a similar controversy and the militants' attacks on its Jakarta offices only triggered a sell-out of the first two editions of Playboy Indonesia.

When it could not stand the animosity, it moved its headquarters to predominantly Hindu Bali where people are more tolerant. But when the controversy died down, so did the magazine.

Apparently, it eventually disappeared from newsstands not because of militants' attacks but rather because the parade of women featured throughout the editions, from the front cover right to the back, were "politely" clothed.

I got new glasses after having worn contacts for two years. I am not sure why it affects my image, but it does. For one thing, the glasses make me really look the part of the job that I recently landed as a secretary. Last time I was at the mall, I saw a store called La Senza Girl. This store is the children's version of an underwear and lingerie boutique similar to Victoria's Secret, but less glitzy. Now, I would like to ask, why do 10-year old girls need lingerie? My guess is they need the super-low cut panties to match their very low cut jeans, and the matching bras are needed, I suppose, for their semi-transparent mid-riff tops.

The media and fashion industries have heavy input into the constant redefinition of what is "cool" and "." It's cool to wear low, tight jeans. It's to wear these with a sports-bra, and maybe an open blouse. The starlets of the media are doing it, and if they are doing it, so should we. Right? Maybe. Or maybe not.

A girl is walking down the hall wearing a top that is practically a bra and jeans that look painted on. She has the attention of all of the guys. What is your impression of her? Be honest, now.

She dresses to impress the men around her, to draw attention to her body the way she thinks they want her to, and because wants to be attractive. While she certainly has succeeded in attracting attention, is she exuding the type of appeal that will attract men to her, or attract them to her body? Is she truly attractive?

Men and women, young and old from all ages, character and race. Most of them ended with one another looking for a shoulder to cry on and the only way out was seeking consolation if not their desire in this land of free with regardless.
